Manic Depression

Of the many kinds of depression, one kind that can be said as truly extreme is the manic depression.  Manic depression is the changing of mood on both extremities from very sad to very happy.  These shifting of moods are called episodes.  A shift from a very happy mood can last for a certain period.  This period is the happy mood episode.

After this episode will come the very sad mood that can also last for a certain period of time.  This next mood is said to be the sad mood episode.  It is said that each episode can last for several days, weeks or even months before another episodes takes place.  Studies have shown that the time in-between episodes can also vary for certain periods.

People who suffer from this kind of disorder have entirely different behaviors.  Some would succumb to predictable and scheduled patterns of behavior while others will have random emotional behavior. There was a study undertaken by behavioral scientist regarding this matter and they found out that among a number of patients observed in the study, only a very small number of patients did not have recurrence of the manic depression episodes.  It was further revealed in a study that by using Lithium, one can greatly reduce recurrence by a large percentage. It was thus observe that a person with this kind of disorder can easily recover without the necessisty of treatment.  According o a study, there are four types of bipolar disorder.

1) Bipolar 1 - This pertains to patients that would have one or maybe even more manic episodes.  It is likewise noted that to experience bipolar 1, a person may or may not be suffering from depression.

2)  Bipolar II - The patient will suffer episodes that involves severe depression and likewise hypomania.  It is said that the presence of hypomania serves to present the bipolar situation in contrast with a unipolar depression.

3) Cyclothymia – A person is said to be suffering from this condition if he or she experiences more than one episodes of hypomania coupled with many episodes of depression.

4)  Bipolar Disorder NOS(Not Otherwise Specified) – The patient in this case, should show signs of bipolar disorder.  However, patients in this category should not fall on the discussed three criteria that were indicated above.

Of course, depressions will have the all the negative symptoms that you can think of like crying with out any cause,  sadness that seems to forever to lurk in your face, unhappiness that no joke or funny things can make you smile, and even irritability.

Aside from this, depression can make you unmindful of anything.  It will make you not able to concentrate on what you are doing.  It will also make you lose any interest in whatever to include cleaning yourself like cleaning your teeth, brushing your hair or even applying make-up. In short, depression will make you a non-person.  Of course, we don’t want this to happen to us, right?  So, if ever we feel depressed for a long period of time, let us submit ourselves for check-up, OK?
